Despite taking Virginia by ten points and running as the de facto nominee, the Arizona senator lost to Mike Huckabee in county after county in the rural southern and western part of the commonwealth.
The GOP contest was comprised mostly of self-identified conservatives, as the Democratic race appeared to attract many of the moderate and independent voters McCain has relied on.
Exit polls in the Old Dominion state showed that conservatives made up 65 percent of the Republican contest and Huckabee won among this majority, 51 percent to 38 percent.
Similarly, 46 percent of GOP primary voters self-identified as evangelical or born-again. Huckabee, a former Baptist preacher, won these voters by 60 percent to 31 percent.
In his victory speech in Alexandria, McCain acknowledged the continued nuisance that is Huckabee with a dose of humor.
